Rice County

       Because Rice County is  centered in the United States, it has been a unique part of the westward expansion. The famed Santa Fe Trail runs though the middle of the county. Several points on the trail are marked. And you can take a Digital Tour here.




       At one point in time, there was a cattle railhead in Raymond, Kansas, where beef were shipped east for slaughter.
       The history of salt in Rice County begins in 1887. Various companies have had salt mines near Lyons with two separate companies still active today.
       Rice County is the birth place of the Dillon Stores which are now a part of the Kroger empire.
